Navy Cadets Showcase Skills at Kokoda Barracks

Department of Defence

Australian Navy Cadets joined 11 teams from across Australia and one from across the Tasman for three days of gruelling trials as part of the Chief of Army Cadet Team Challenge for 2025.

Conducted at Canungra in south-east Queensland's scenic rim, it was the conclusion of an activity that pitted 130 cadets against the elements, relying on their endurance and wits, and their ability to work as a team. Final results saw the cadet team from New Zealand take first place, followed by the Air Force cadet team in second place and the Army cadet team from Tasmania in third.

Director Australian Navy Cadets Commander Mark Cohayney said the team valued the chance to be part of the challenge, designed by Australian Army Cadets to demonstrate the individual and collective ability of the cadets to problem-solve and complete tasks throughout the activity.

"Cadets encounter a sequence of problems intended to test their resilience, leadership and teamwork while displaying the ADF cadets' values of service, courage, respect, integrity and excellence," Commander Cohayney said.

"While the end result sees a winning team, the collective experience enhances skills and confidence in all those who participate."

The teams completed challenges that tested their navigation, observation and deduction, problem-solving, and engineering skills. The cadets also undertook first aid and radio communications assessments and physical challenges, including equipment moves and a confidence course.

Head of Reserve and Cadet Support Division Major General Douglas Laidlaw, who visited the activity, was impressed by the drive demonstrated by the cadet teams representing communities from across all regions of Australia.

"Events like the Chief of Army Cadet Team Challenge are unique and provide young people with opportunities not found in other Australian youth development programs," Major General Laidlaw said.

"It is a great example of Defence's commitment to the Australian community and our future leaders."
