NBN fibre upgrades hits two million premises milestone

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

A record two million additional households can now access faster and more reliable fibre broadband as part of upgrades to the National Broadband Network.

Full-fibre upgrades are available on-demand at no additional installation cost where an eligible customer takes out a higher speed plan through their Retail Service Provider. A fibre connection allows Australians to access NBN's highest speed tiers of close to 1 Gbps.

With Australians increasingly connected and reliant on high quality internet - from accessing online services, streaming content, videoconferencing with colleagues, and more - a fibre connection means faster speeds and a more reliable broadband.

The Albanese Government is committed to expanding fibre access on the NBN to even more Australians through $2.4 billion investment in the 2022-23 October Federal Budget.

The investment will allow an additional 1.5 million premises to transition from a slower and less reliable copper to full-fibre by 2025 - over 660,000 of which will be in regional areas.

Upgrades to the fixed line network are complemented by a $480 million investment by the Albanese Government to upgrade the NBN Fixed Wireless network, and the recent launch of a new uncapped NBN Sky Muster product to boost internet speeds in regional areas.
