Residents and commuters are advised that Nelson Road, Box Hill, will be temporarily closed between Box Road and The Water Lane from 19 January 2026 for approximately six-seven weeks, weather permitting, to allow for a major upgrade.

The upgrade aims to deliver a safer and more modern roadway to one of Box Hill's busiest roads.

Planned works include:

  • Road widening and elevation
  • Construction of a new roundabout at Box Road and Nelson Road
  • Relocation of service utilities
  • Installation of stormwater drainage infrastructure

A detour will operate throughout the closure, redirecting motorists via Box Road, Grandhill Parkway, and The Water Lane. Access to Palazzo View will remain available via the detour route. Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 10 tonnes will be required to detour via Annangrove Road or Terry Road. This does not apply to vehicles which have a destination only accessible via Nelson Road.

Traffic controllers will be on-site to assist motorists and ensure the safety of all road users.

Works have been scheduled at this time when traffic volumes are at their lowest, and to allow the upgrade to be completed safely, efficiently, and as quickly as possible, minimising disruption to residents. It will also save ratepayers approximately $350,000 and will be completed in half the time.

These works are part of a significant infrastructure investment to support the rapidly growing Box Hill community.

Council urges motorists to drive with care and follow all signage and directions from traffic controllers.
