Nelson Road to remain

The Hills Shire Council has voted to retain the name of Nelson Road, in Box Hill, after the community rallied to keep its existing name.

Council previously exhibited proposed changes to two sections of Nelson Road to make it easier to navigate and these included:

  • Section One: Rename part of Nelson Road between Windsor Road and Edwards Road, Box Hill to ‘Skarratt Road’; and
  • Section Two: Rename part of Nelson Road between Edwards Road and Old Pitt Town Road, Box Hill and Nelson to ‘Old Pitt Town Road’.

No change was proposed to the section of Nelson Road, extending from Old Pitt Town Road into the suburb of Nelson.

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne said the community didn’t want the road name to change and Council listened.

“Our residents have spoken and they wanted Nelson Road to be retained and that’s what we’ve decided to do,” Mayor Byrne said.

“Many of our residents who provided feedback said the road had been in use for many years and the name commonly known. Others made the point that the name change would create a loss of connection between the Box Hill and Nelson communities, because it has been known as ‘the road leading to Nelson’. And some highlighted that the original road name promoted the significance of the Nelson suburb.

“I thank the community for their input, in particular the Box Hill and Nelson Progress Association who have been invaluable throughout this project. The Progress Association continues to work with Council to ensure the Box Hill and Nelson communities remain highly liveable as growth continues in the region,” Mayor Byrne added.

More than 130 submissions were received, with only 10 in support of the name change.

Adding to Tuesday’s decision, Council will commence the process of property renumbering for the entire length of Nelson Road, to allow for addresses to be allocated to new lots fronting Nelson Road within the Box Hill Release Area.

Additional signage will also be installed as part of future upgrades at the intersections of Nelson and Edwards Roads and Nelson and Old Pitt Town Roads to clearly identify the street numbers.
