New Adelaide-Launceston flight welcome news for tourism

Peter Gutwein,Premier and Minister for Tourism

The Tasmanian Government welcomes Virgin Australia's new South Australia to Tasmania route that will be in place for the September school holidays.

A new direct flight between Adelaide and Launceston from September 7 will bring with it a much-needed boost for our tourism industry in what has been a challenging 18 months.

It is also a clear indication of the confidence the airlines continue to show in Tasmania's economy and its standing as Australia's must-see tourism destination.

While Tasmanians have been fantastic in supporting local businesses and tourism across the state, we know recent border closures designed to keep Tasmanians safe have again significantly impacted our tourism and hospitality sectors.

This new direct flight will be welcome news to these sectors, and in the meantime, we have introduced a fresh round of our hugely successful travel voucher incentive scheme to encourage Tasmanians to support local businesses and experience their home state during the quieter months.

Registrations for the $7.5 million voucher scheme close at 5pm today, with vouchers allocated via a ballot system to ensure they are fairly allocated to as many Tasmanians as possible.

I wish all those who registered the best of luck when the lucky recipients are announced on August 11.
