Joint media release with the Hon Tara Moriarty MLC
Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain and Member for Eden-Monaro has opened a new workshop and education space to strengthen programs that connect Aboriginal people with Country and support traditional land management practices.
The facilities at Bega Local Aboriginal Land Council (Bega LALC) include a new workshop, classroom and office building and new septic system. The site has also been fenced and made more sustainable with the installation of a solar system.
Bega LALC was awarded $1,360,175 from the jointly funded Australian and NSW Government's Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, with a $40,520 co-contribution from the Bega LALC.
The multipurpose workshop offers the community a space for training and gatherings and will serve as a post-disaster hub for emergency supply distribution and support.
The facilities will support the delivery of Bega LALC's land management programs including cultural burning and heritage assessments.
It will also encourage growth in the organisation's horticultural and commercial catering enterprises, which provide employment opportunities for locals.
The Bega LALC provides services to Aboriginal people in a catchment spanning approximately 5,900 square kilometres, from Merimbula Bridge to Aragunnu and from the coast across the Snowy Mountains to the Murray River.
