Greater Shepparton City Council in partnership with VicReturn is encouraging residents to recycle their eligible drink containers and support their community through the launch of a new Container Deposit Scheme Bin Basket initiative.
Launching the project pilot in Greater Shepparton on 29 September 2026, the Container Deposit Scheme Bin Basket initiative provides residents with a convenient way to share eligible drink containers with others who may wish to collect and redeem them through the Container Deposit Scheme.
With 10 baskets being installed alongside public bins throughout suitable and key locations in Shepparton, residents can place eligible cans and bottles in the basket rather than the recycle waste bin. Community members can then collect the containers and return them to local collection points through the Container Deposit Scheme program, earning the 10-cent refund while helping reduce litter and landfill waste.
The initiative also aims to encourage responsible recycling habits and promote awareness of Victoria's Container Deposit Scheme across the community.

- Deakin Reserve, Shepparton
Council's Director Infrastructure, Aidin Montazami, said the program provides both environmental and community benefits.
"The Container Deposit Scheme Bin Basket initiative is a simple and practical way to encourage recycling while supporting community participation in Victoria's Container Deposit Scheme," Mr Montazami said.
"Whether you're collecting containers for a local sporting club, community group, charity or simply looking to earn a little extra money, these baskets make it easier to keep valuable recyclables out of landfill.
"It's also a great opportunity to teach people of all ages about the importance of recycling correctly and how small actions can make a positive impact on our environment."
Council encourages residents to keep an eye out for the new baskets and help make Shepparton cleaner, greener and more sustainable by ensuring eligible drink containers are placed in the Bin Baskets for collection and recycling.
