New car park at Julius River completes upgraded visitor experience

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Environment and Parks

The Tasmanian majority Liberal Government is investing record amounts into improving our parks and reserves infrastructure and this week the final contract in the Tarkine Drive project was signed.

This project will provide a much improved visitor experience at Julius River with a start this month on a significant upgrade to the car park.

Julius River, on the northern edge of the Tarkine in the far North-West, is a popular spot for Tasmanians and visitors alike. It includes cool-temperate rain forest with species that evolved when Tasmanian was part of the Gondwanan supercontinent

The car park will be reconfigured, sealed and have new line markings installed, which is part of the Tasmanian Liberal Government's $500,000 commitment to upgrade visitor facilities on the Tarkine Drive.

This final stage of the project follows the completion of upgraded infrastructure at Julius River and Milkshake Hills and is part of a $31 million investment by the Tasmanian Liberal Government in our parks and reserves.

Works completed last year have provided visitors with upgraded picnic facilities to enjoy a meal with family and friends and the ability to explore the park from the comfort of a hardened walking track and an elevated boardwalk platforms.

Work is also currently underway on the construction of new interpretation signage at Milkshake Hills which will help visitors to navigate the park and understand the local heritage of the area.

The car park, which is no longer suited to current visitor demand, will be closed for three weeks in March during construction. Once complete parking areas will be allocated on Sumac Road for larger vehicles.

Additional details on visitor access to the site can be obtained from the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service website – www.parks.tas.tov.au.
