As I step into the role of Canada's Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO), I want to acknowledge those who work every day to improve the health of people in Canada. I look forward to working with partners across governments, Indigenous communities, health professionals, researchers, community organizations and international colleagues to advance public health in Canada.
Together, we will continue to address urgent public health challenges, including the ongoing measles outbreak and the toxic drug crisis. These are priorities that I discussed with Minister Michel, as she reinforced the important work that the Public Health Agency of Canada delivers for Canadians. I also met with our team working to implement the Measles Action Plan to bring the current outbreak under control and reduce gaps in vaccination. Later in April, Canada will host the launch of Vaccination Week in the Americas, and I look forward to welcoming representatives from the Pan American Health Organization as we highlight the importance of vaccination and strong immunization programs to overall health and well-being.
I am committed to communicating credible, evidence-based health information and have already started to discuss strategies to reach Canadians. I am eager to work with colleagues to address false health information and strengthen public trust, ensuring Canadians have the information they need and expect to make evidence-based health decisions for themselves and their families.
I would also like to thank Dr. Natasha Crowcroft for serving as Acting CPHO since September 2025. Her extensive expertise and leadership in multiple roles ensured stability during a pivotal time for the organization and ensured sustained progress on key public health priorities. I look forward to working with Dr. Crowcroft in her leadership role as Vice-President of the Infectious Diseases and Vaccination Programs Branch.
I am starting this role with a deep respect for those who have come before me, and with a strong sense of pride and responsibility: This is an important moment for public health in Canada. It calls for clarity, credibility, and a renewed focus on what matters most to Canadians. Throughout my tenure, I will work alongside the President and with the support of the dedicated employees of the Public Health Agency of Canada to support the physical and mental health of Canadians, as well as to prepare for and respond to public health events.
