Rockhampton Regional Council, in partnership with the Queensland Government, has officially opened a new Changing Places facility at Southside Pool, ensuring more people in our community can enjoy a day out with dignity and ease.
The $275,000 facility, fully funded through the Queensland Government Works for Queensland program, provides essential amenities for people with extra support needs, including a ceiling hoist, an adult-sized change table, and additional space to improve safety and comfort.
Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said the facility would make a real difference for many local families.
"For people with extra support needs, access to suitable bathroom facilities helps them fully participate in simple community activities like going for a swim at the local pool," Mayor Williams said.
"This upgrade means Southside Pool is now better equipped to cater to all needs and abilities, creating a safer and more welcoming space for everyone.
"It's also a great example of how Council is working with other levels of government to deliver infrastructure that supports accessibility and inclusivity in our Region."
Member for Rockhampton Donna Kirkland said the Queensland Government was committed to supporting vital infrastructure delivery for the people of Rockhampton.
"We want to see rural and regional communities across Queensland thrive, which is why we have made Works for Queensland a permanent funding program," Ms Kirkland said.
"Projects like this will not only help improve the liveability of local communities, but also support tens of thousands of jobs in rural and remote council areas."
The new facility, incorporated into an existing building, required modifications to meet accessibility standards.
These works included the removal and refurbishment of existing amenities alongside the construction and installation of the new Changing Places facility.
Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the new facility was an important step forward.
"This is great news for local individuals and their families," Cr Rutherford said.
"Without accessible facilities like this, many people are forced to cut outings short or avoid them altogether.
"Southside Pool joins Mount Morgan Pool in offering a fully equipped Changing Places facility, giving more people the freedom to participate in pool activities.
"These facilities are more than just bathrooms—they provide a safe and dignified space for people with extra support needs, ensuring our community is more inclusive."
Construction began in early February and is now complete, with the facility ready for use by the community.
