New Fishing Packages Boost Local Clubs for Weekend

NSW Gov

Gone Fishing Day is set to be bigger and better in 2026, with NSW expanding celebrations across the weekend of 17 - 18 October 2026.

The Minns Government is encouraging NSW fishing clubs and fishing organisations to get involved by applying for specially designed fishing packages to help host their own local Gone Fishing Weekend events.

Applications for fishing packages are open now and close on 11 August 2026.

These packages include rod and reel kits, giveaways and other resources to help clubs create welcoming, family-friendly events that encourage more people to get involved in recreational fishing.

They're a great way for local fishing clubs and fishing organisations to showcase what they do, connect with their communities and help inspire the next generation of fishers.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) will host major Gone Fishing Weekend events in Sydney, Lake Illawarra, Lake Macquarie, Grafton, Lake Wallace (Lithgow), Lake Oberon (Reef Reserve), Lake Windamere (Cudgegong Waters Park) and Mudgee (Lawson Park).

In the lead up to Gone Fishing Weekend, DPIRD will continue to deliver a range of community fishing initiatives including

  • "Fish for Life: Women on the Water" workshop series on 11 July, with three free women's fishing workshops taking place across Sydney, the Central Coast and Lake Illawarra designed to create opportunities for women to build confidence, learn practical fishing skills and connect through recreational fishing. • "Take a mate" fishing days will be also held on R U OK? Day (10 September), to encourage people to connect, check in and support one another through shared outdoor experiences.

The Gone Fishing Weekend events and the DPIRD fishing workshops are supported by DPIRD Fisheries and the Recreational Fishing Trust.

Minister for Agriculture and Regional NSW, Tara Moriarty said:

"The Minns Government is proud to see Gone Fishing Day expand into a full weekend-giving more people the chance to get outdoors and enjoy recreational fishing."

"Gone Fishing Weekend is driven by local communities, particularly in regional NSW where clubs and volunteers bring these events to life."

"We're making it easier for local clubs to deliver hands-on, family-friendly fishing experiences that welcome people of all ages and skill levels."

"Mark 17-18 October 2026 in your calendar-this year's Gone Fishing Weekend is set to be bigger, more inclusive and more connected than ever."
