Council's outdoor workforce has received a welcome boost with the opening of the new garage workshop at the Warnock Street Depot.
The new $6.6 million garage was constructed between April 2024 to August 2026, and will make it significantly easier to service the city's light and heavy fleet.
If features upgraded utilities and fittings, new office and workshop areas, work stations, storage, a large gantry crane for heavy vehicles, and a significant electrical upgrade for the entire Depot.
The new facility is the first (and largest) stage of the Warnock Street Master Plan, a long term plan which aims to gradually redevelop the Depot to meet modern standards.
Mayor Tom Kennedy said the upgrade would provide a range of benefits for Council and the community.
"With this new facility we're now much better equipped to do more work in-house. This means less reliance on external contractors, more savings, and better service to the community," he said.
"It also offers greatly improved working conditions for current staff, and provides a modern workplace that should hopefully help us recruit and retain staff well into the future."
Council's old garage within the Depot will now be gradually decommissioned and demolished at a later date.
