- McGowan Government continues to support training and employment for Western Australians in the energy industry
- Thirty apprentices attain nationally recognised Certificate III level qualifications in 2022
The energy industry continues to provide training and employment for Western Australians, with 30 apprentices graduating from Western Power's apprenticeship program today, all securing employment with the utility in 2023.
As part of their four-year apprenticeship, the graduates gained valuable and necessary on-the-job vocational experience, skills and knowledge to be part of WA's energy future.
The Western Power national accredited program teaches specialised skills and expertise across four streams: electrical, overhead linework, cable jointing, and heavy mechanical.
Training of apprentices requires partnership between the apprentice, depot teams and the registered training organisations to deliver certification training.
Western Power is currently recruiting for its 2023 intake of apprentices and trainees. Successful candidates will be notified in December 2022 and start their skills development pathway in January 2023.
As stated by Energy Minister Bill Johnston:
"The State Government is a committed supporter of education and training and recognises the value of apprenticeships across all industries. I strongly believe vocational education and training plays a vital role in supporting the community and the State's economic growth.
"These programs not only help Western Australians on a career pathway, they also benefit organisations such as Western Power by facilitating diversity of ideas and backgrounds making businesses stronger going forward.
"It's excellent to see an increasing number of women taking up the opportunity to become apprentices and I acknowledge the great work Western Power has been doing to ensure a pipeline of talented and committed employees in an evolving energy industry.
"Congratulations to the graduates and thanks to the hundreds of colleagues, the family members, and friends who have supported each of the apprentices on their journey."
