Territory growers now have a practical new tool to help them correctly identify and manage weeds in their cropping systems, with the release of the Common Northern Territory Crop Weeds Field Guide.
Developed by the Northern Territory Government's Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF), the guide features photographs and descriptions of more than 50 common weed species found in NT crops, including grasses, broadleaf weeds and sedges.
Designed as a quick and easy reference, the field guide supports producers, agronomists and industry advisors to precisely identify weeds at both seedling and mature stages.
Accurate weed identification is the first step in effective control and helps producers make informed management decisions to protect crop yields and sustainability.
Department of Agriculture and Fisheries CEO Amelia Vellar said the new field guide would be an invaluable resource for the Territory's cropping sector.
"Weeds are one of the biggest challenges to productivity and profitability in cropping systems," Ms Vellar said.
"This new field guide gives our farmers a practical, Territory-focused tool to help them identify and manage weeds more effectively."
"By working closely with Territory farmers, local agronomists and NT Farmers, the Department is ensuring producers have the right resources to strengthen the long-term sustainability of our cropping sector."
The Common Northern Territory Crop Weeds Field Guide was developed by DAF agronomists Arthur Cameron and Michael Finey, using locally sourced photographs to reflect the unique conditions of the NT's agricultural regions.
NT Farmers President Simon Smith said the guide would be widely adopted across the industry.
"This guide is a great example of the practical support our growers need," Mr Smith said.
"Having locally relevant photos and descriptions means Territory farmers can confidently identify weeds in the paddock and take timely action to protect their crops."
"We're pleased to partner with DAF to distribute the guide across the Territory and make sure every grower has access to this important resource."
