New Intake Of Intensive Care Paramedics For NSW

NSW Gov

This week, 20 highly qualified Intensive Care Paramedics (ICPs) have been deployed across NSW following the completion of an intensive 27-week specialist training program designed to expand their clinical expertise.

The comprehensive training includes eight weeks in-class learning of classroom instruction at NSW Ambulance's State Operations Centre, a five-week hospital placement, and 14 weeks of hands-on practice under supervision of an experienced ICP.

These newly trained ICPs will now spend up to two years consolidating their skills in dedicated intensive care paramedic units, further refining their clinical expertise.

ICPs are specialised emergency paramedical professionals equipped to perform advanced clinical procedures in high-pressure environments and situations. Their training emphasises technical proficiency, strong professional collaboration and the importance of clinical exposure.

These specialist skills include advanced airway management, such as endotracheal intubation, and providing critical care for life-threatening conditions. They also include severe chest injuries, traumatic head injuries, and acute cardiac conditions where more advanced interventions are needed.

These newly trained specialist paramedics come from various locations across the state, including Andrew McLennan who is based in Western NSW and is enjoying the different perspective advanced clinical thinking will bring to his patient care.
