New Law Marks Milestone for Early Childhood Sector

TheEducation and Care Services National Law Application Bill 2025(Bill) has passed State Parliament.

Western Australia's new legislation aligns more closely with other jurisdictions and enhance safety and wellbeing in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) settings. It will also provide for the timelier introduction of future amendments to National Law.

In Australia more than 1.4 million children benefit from Early Childhood Education and Care services and in WA 130,000 children attend an approved service.

The Cook Government continues to progress a range of important reforms in Early Childhood Education and Care and across ECEC settings.

Western Australia, through the Education and Care Regulatory Unit (ECRU) has a robust compliance and enforcement program in place that oversees the regulation of the ECEC sector, which includes Family Day Care.

Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children attending early learning services is apriority of the Cook Government.

The ECRU will continue to inform the ECEC sector on implementation dates in the coming months.

As stated by Early Childhood Minister Sabine Winton:

"This Bill is a critical step in aligning Western Australia with the rest of the country when it comes to enhancing safety and wellbeing in Early Childhood Education and Care settings.

"This legislation builds upon the ongoing work done by Western Australia's ECRU in the compliance and enforcement of the ECEC sector.

"I would like to thank those all of those who have helped the Cook Government reach this milestone."
