New Location, Fireworks Show For Riverway Movie Nights

Celebrate with a bang as Townsville's premiere open-air cinema experience moves to new digs at Riverway Stadium from this Friday night.

The stadium sports a permanent big screen and audio system, which will give moviegoers a better viewing experience for these free movie nights. The move across to the stadium will be celebrated with a fireworks display from 8pm this Friday after a free screening of Ainbo: Spirit of the Amazon.

Set in a fictional region of the Amazon rainforest, the PG-rated film follows the adventures of a 13-year-old girl called Ainbo as she works with her friends to save her tribe's home.

Deputy Mayor Suzy Batkovic said this would be a great night out for the whole family.

"Moving Riverway Movie Nights into Riverway Stadium will give families a whole new free movie experience," Cr Batkovic said.

"Bring a blanket or chair, pack some snacks, or grab a bite to eat from one of the food trucks on site."

"There will be plenty to keep the kids entertained and burn off some energy, with activities including corn toss, quoits and inflatable axe throwing."

"Riverway Movie Nights is a great way for families and friends to come together and enjoy an evening out, with the fireworks display making the night even more special."

Mayor Nick Dametto said it was good to see one of Council's prime facilities being used in a new way.

"Riverway is one of Townsville's premier outdoor precincts and it's great to be able to throw open the stadium gates for Riverway Movie Nights moving forward," Cr Dametto said.

"It's a versatile venue that can be a sporting field by day and by night transform into a unique outdoor cinema.

"A lot of time and care goes into maintaining our outdoor spaces and this is just another way for local families to enjoy them."

Food trucks available on the night will include Polka Euro Street Food, Piped Piper ice cream truck, Cheap as Chips and Wood Fire Pizza.
