New Melbourne East Police Station opens its doors

Melburnians and visitors to the city will benefit from the new Melbourne East Police Station's central location.

Melbourne East police will now be stationed at 202 Bourke Street, allowing police to provide an even stronger presence in the bustling CBD.

It replaces the previous Melbourne East Police Station which was located in Flinders Lane, giving local police a more visible and centralised location.

North West Metro Region A/Superintendent Craig Peel said the new police station is a state of the art facility which will serve the community well into the future.

"The Melbourne East Police Station is one of the most critical stations in the entire state," A/Supt Peel said.

"Moving our base to Bourke Street gives us a central spot to provide a highly visible police presence with a fast response to incidents within the east end of the CBD.

"The new station also allows us to provide a larger policing hub for the city.

"Careful consideration has gone into the design of the new Melbourne East station to ensure it is fit for purpose and allows us to serve the community well."

Police officers from the previous station will move to the new station, which will be large enough to accommodate a number of other specialist units that cover a range of policing functions.

A police caravan will be set up out the front of the new station in Bourke Street today (17 April) while the move is underway.

The station will be fully operational tomorrow once the move is completed. The Melbourne East Police Station phone number remains the same (9637 1100).

The new Melbourne East police station was funded as part of the Victorian Government's 2018/19 Community Safety Statement.
