Construction on Tasmania's largest multi-purpose sport and recreation facility has been completed, marking a major milestone for Northern Tasmania.
The completion of the jointly funded $43.6 million Northern Suburbs Community Recreation Hub follows 18 months of construction by more than 500 workers and suppliers to transform the former derelict industrial site at Mowbray into a state-of-the-art community facility.
PCYC North had been appointed the hub's venue manager, relocating from its Newstead site where it's served the community since 1968, while the Northern Tasmanian Netball Association will be a co-lessee.
This management arrangement significantly expands the capacity and programs of both organisations, enabling greater accessibility and year-round programming for community sport, youth engagement, older adults and people living with a disability.
Deputy Premier, Guy Barnett, said delivering the hub marks another example of the Tasmanian Government's investment in community and sporting infrastructure.
"This investment in community sport gives young people and families across Northern Tasmania access to first-class facilities, lifting participation, supporting talent development and inspiring the next generation," the Deputy Premier said.
"Launceston's Northern Suburbs have long been identified as a priority area for youth engagement, and the hub will deliver structured programs focused on leadership development.
"Combining the expertise of the PCYC North and the NTNA, the hub will be a safe, positive space for community to connect and engage in a wide range of activities.
"We are delivering for Tasmania by investing in the facilities needed to increase access to community sport across the State."
Federal Member for Bass, Jess Teesdale, said she was pleased to see a provider has been contracted to run the new Northern Suburbs Rec Hub.
"Reaching this milestone brings us one step closer to opening the doors and providing a wonderful custom designed and built facility for the Northern Suburbs," Ms Teesdale said.
A Community Open Day is being scheduled at the Hub for late March 2026.
