New naming policy for community infrastructure

Council has adopted a new Naming of Community Infrastructure General Policy to guide the naming of community infrastructure, including parks, reserves, bridges, paths, trails, pools, libraries, and community buildings.

The new policy will replace the Naming of Parks and Reserves General Policy and the Naming of Bridges General Policy and will safeguard that appropriate names are chosen.

It will also ensure that necessary community engagement occurs, and that consideration is given to dual naming with a name selected by the Traditional Custodians of the area.

Importantly, the creation of one general policy will embrace community and cultural expectations by honouring people who have made a significant contribution to the community, as well as events and nature that is iconic to the region.

It also includes infrastructure previously not covered by the existing policies, such as trails, pools and buildings.
