Work to deliver a new Northern Mental Health Precinct has reached an important milestone with a Development Application (DA) submitted to the City of Launceston.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the $90 million development – which is an important component of the broader Launceston General Hospital (LGH) Precinct Masterplan – will help to improve mental health outcomes for people in Northern Tasmania.
"We are delivering for Tasmania with a contemporary purpose-built mental health precinct at 52 Frankland Street, as part of our plan to enhance mental health services in Northern Tasmania," Minister Archer said.
"The Northern Mental Health Precinct will feature a 30-bed mental health inpatient unit to replace the current Northside Unit, a Recovery College, Safe Haven, dedicated car park, and connection to the Launceston General Hospital via a link bridge.
"The Precinct will provide a contemporary, home-like environment for immediate support, brief interventions, education and assistance in navigating services.
"Importantly, it will improve mental health outcomes by enabling timely access to care and reducing avoidable Emergency Department presentations, and places consumers, families, and support networks at the centre of design and service delivery.
"With site preparation works for the new facility also underway, our government is delivering for Tasmanians, to ensure access to the right care, at the right place, at the right time."
The Tasmanian Government has worked closely with clinicians, stakeholders, and the community to shape the design of the Northern Mental Health Precinct.
The new concept design for the Precinct incorporates extensive stakeholder feedback, ensuring the project delivers the best possible outcomes for staff, consumers, and visitors.
Site preparation works are expected to be complete in early 2026.
