The Casterton Fire Brigade celebrated the official opening of its new barbecue area and plaque dedicated to a late member at the station.

On his passing, late Casterton Firefighter Peter 'Monk' McCallum bequeathed funds to several community groups and the local fire brigade was fortunate enough to be one of those recipients.

Inspired by his love for a 'barbie', members of the brigade felt it was a fitting tribute to build a barbecue area dedicated to 'Monk', in recognition of his 37 years of active service.

The McCallum family was in attendance to join the brigade in unveiling the new plaque.

Casterton Fire Brigade Captain Lee Condon said Peter always demonstrated comradeship with his fellow firefighters and their families.

"It is a great honour to recognise the life and service of our member, Peter McCallum," he said.

"The barbecue area is a fantastic addition to our new fire station and will be used extensively, not only by the brigade, but also visitors and Strike Teams who may need to work in our area."
