New pound opens at Links Drive

The new Cairns Regional Council Animal Care & Education Centre will open on Monday (27 June), replacing the current Council pound on McCoombe Street.

Located at 55-57 Links Drive, Woree, the $7 million facility is built to best-practice standards to ensure the welfare of both animals in care and Council staff.

Council’s Animal Management Team attends over 8,000 calls for service each year and cares for around 1800 lost and wandering dogs and cats while waiting for their owners to collect them.

The new pound has double the capacity of the current facility to meet future demand of the growing community and corresponding increase in the number of pets in the city.

The Animal Care & Education Centre is open to the public for pet collection at the following times:

  • Weekdays – 4.30pm to 5.30pm
  • Weekends and public holidays – noon to 12.30pm
