New Program On Menu To Boost School Canteens

  • Cook Government launching $10 million program to boost public school canteens
  • Grants between $50,000 and $250,000 now available for new canteen equipment and upgrades in public schools
  • Part of Cook Government's commitment to supporting the wellbeing of WA students and ensuring healthy lifestyles

More Western Australian school canteens are set to receive upgrades and better equipment, with applications now open for the Cook Government's Supporting School Canteens Program.

The new $10 million program will help WA school canteens purchase new equipment and fund upgrades, to ensure more students have access to healthy, quality food at school.

The first funding round is now open for applications, with WA public schools invited to apply for grants up to $50,000 and $250,000.

These grants will help reduce the costs associated with running and maintaining school canteens, which are often run by volunteers and supported by donations through the local school community.

Applications for Round 1 will close on 8 May 2026. For more information, visit: www.education.wa.edu.au/-/affordable-and-healthy-lunches-on-more-schools-menus

Information on future rounds and opening dates will be provided to schools later this year.

The new Supporting School Canteens Program builds on the Cook Government's expansion of the School Breakfast Program, and means more students will be able to access affordable healthy foods in school canteens, giving them the best possible chance to learn.

As stated by Education Minister Sabine Winton:

"This is an exciting opportunity for WA schools to give their canteens a real boost and increase their capacity to serve up healthy and affordable food that supports students to thrive.

"We know that when students eat well, they are more focused, more engaged, and ready to learn.

"Our government is committed to providing quality school facilities that support student wellbeing, reduce cost-of-living pressures, and improve nutritional standards.

"Our school canteens are at the heart of healthy school communities, and this investment by the Cook Government will help upgrade facilities, expand eating options and make it easier for students and their families easier access to healthy, quality food."
