New round of Dame Roma Mitchell grants open today

Children and young people aged under 30 who are, or have been, in care are being urged to apply for the latest round of the Dame Roma Mitchell biannual grants, now open.

A total of $90,000 has been allocated to support these children and young people to achieve personal goals, contribute to their health and wellbeing and provide development opportunities.

During 2020/21, 208 applications worth more than $170,000 was delivered to this cohort to fund everything from furniture, white goods and laptops, art equipment, a sewing machine and a saxophone.

Others used the funding to help cover the costs of driving lessons and post-secondary courses.

Minister for Child Protection Rachel Sanderson encouraged eligible children and young people to apply.

"The State Government's Dame Roma Mitchell grants are designed to empower children and young people and to help them achieve their dreams," said Minister Sanderson.

"The grants are primarily accessed by young people who have transitioned to independent living to help them study and live independently and are used to provide a range of social, self-development and professional opportunities."

The grants are also administered to children and young people living in kinship, foster and residential care.

Latest round applications close on September 24.
