New school crossing on Princes Street

Michael Ferguson, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

The Rockliff Liberal Government is taking action to make Tasmanian roads safer.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson, said a new school crossing at the Princes Street Primary School has been completed as part of the Rockliff Liberal Government's Vulnerable Road User Program (VRUP) and the Australian Government's $3 billion Road Safety Program.

"The VRUP is a part of the Tasmanian Liberal Government's $75 million Towards Zero Action Plan 2020-24 and is made possible by working closely with local government to improve the safety of all road users," Mr Ferguson said.

"In Tasmania, local government roads account for around 80 per cent of the Tasmanian public road network, coming to some 14,500 kilometres, with 55 per cent of fatal and serious injuries occurring on these roads.

"We also know that pedestrians and cyclists represent one in four fatal and serious injuries in our major towns and cities, so the Vulnerable Road User Program provides funding to councils to create safer environments for our vulnerable road users in our urban areas.

"Children are some of our most vulnerable road users and this new school crossing will help reduce the risk of conflict between children and motor vehicles.

"The new crossing is situated away from the busy roundabout of Proctors Road, King Street and Princes Street, and provides better sight lines for motorists and children crossing the road.

"This new school crossing is also supported by the Rockliff Liberal Government's state-wide School Crossing Patrol Officer (SCPO) program. Our SCPOs help play an important role in helping keep our children safe when crossing our roads on their way to and from school each day."
