Lake Wendouree's famous heritage trams have received a boost with the completion of a section of track along Wendouree Parade.
Works to replace 300 metres of track were funded through a successful Ballarat Tramway Museum application for $200,000 grant from the Victorian Government's Pick My Project initiative, with a further $590,000 contributed by the City of Ballarat.
The project was delivered by civil works contractor Fulton Hogan during September.
The works program included excavation and removal of the old track and the preparation of the base for the new rail placement.
The new rail was placed on a concrete base with precast concrete sleepers, with an asphalt pavement complete the works to tie into the existing road.
City of Ballarat Mayor Ben Taylor said the trams were ridden by thousands of visitors to Lake Wendouree each year.
"Our heritage trams are a drawcard for visitors to Lake Wendouree and this new section of track will help ensure this unique window into our transport past can continue for years to come."
Member for Wendouree Juliana Addison said the Ballarat Tramways Museum did amazing work restoring and making Victoria's iconic trams accessible to the community. "I'm delighted that the Andrews Labor Government has been able to help with $200,000 towards this important project."
Ballarat Tramway Museum President Paul Mong said the new track was much better the lake's historic trams.
"With the support of the community, State Government and the City of Ballarat we are very pleased to announce the new section of track is officially open."
