Around 100 people will soon call the new Waterloo Metro Quarter home, moving into 70 modern social housing apartments built directly above the new Waterloo Metro Station.
The project has been delivered under the Minns Labor Government's record $6.6 billion Building Homes for NSW program, which is delivering thousands of new homes across the state for people who need them most.
Each apartment has been thoughtfully designed, with a focus on energy efficiency, comfort, and connectivity with residents just a two-minute metro ride from Central Station and eight minutes from Barangaroo.
Positioned in one of Sydney's most accessible locations, the development also features a communal terrace with sweeping views of the CBD and inner west.
The Minns Labor Government is building a better New South Wales, delivering 8,400 new social homes and investing in the infrastructure and services that growing communities need.
In Waterloo, work is also underway to transform the Metro Quarter into a vibrant new town centre, complete with more homes, shops, and a public plaza.
Delivered in partnership with John Holland and Mirvac, the majority of the new homes will be managed by community housing provider Link Wentworth, with 14 apartments dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tenants managed by Birribee Housing.
The completion of these new homes marks a major milestone in the renewal of Waterloo South, Australia's largest social housing redevelopment, which will deliver more than 3,000 new homes, including over 1,500 dedicated social and affordable dwellings in the heart of Sydney.
Premier of New South Wales, Chris Minns said:
"The answer to the housing challenge is simple but hard - we need more, well located homes and today is a milestone in our work to deliver that.
"Projects like the Waterloo Metro Quarter show how we can boost housing close to transport, jobs and the services people rely on.
"By integrating new homes with world-class transport, shops and open space, we're building a fairer, stronger and more sustainable city.
"We know there is more work to be done, but the completion of this project means 100 more people will have a safe, modern and well-connected place to call home."
Minister for Housing and Homelessness, Rose Jackson said:
"These are beautiful, modern homes built exactly where people need them - close to jobs, transport, shops and local services.
"We have existing tenants at Waterloo South who have seen these new units and cannot wait to move in. They are light-filled and spacious and will provide dignified housing for dozens of families, couples, and singles.
"Every home we build here supports the wider renewal by giving existing tenants security and stability as we transform the Waterloo estate into a thriving community for decades to come."
Minister for Transport, John Graham said:
"This is world-class housing right above a world-class metro, providing connection and opportunity for those moving in here.
"Residents of Waterloo Metro Quarter will enjoy easy access to the city and beyond, with a journey of just two minutes to Central Station and fast links across the harbour and to the south-west as the system expands."
Member for Heffron Ron Hoenig said:
"For far too long my Waterloo public housing tenants have lived in shocking conditions that no one should have to endure.
"Today is not just about new homes. It's about recognising progress and renewal for a community that for decades has been treated as an afterthought and not a priority.
"The Waterloo South redevelopment shows what can be achieved when the government works directly with residents to shape their future. While there is still more to do, I'm incredibly grateful my constituents."
