New Strategy Launched on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Nic Street, Minister Community Services and Development

The abuse of older Tasmanians is unacceptable.

The Rockliff Liberal Government is proud to support the Council on the Ageing Tasmania to organise activities each year on the 15th of June recognising World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

This year, walks are being held in Hobart and Burnie today and in Launceston tomorrow.

Minister for Community Services and Development, Nic Street, said the abuse of older people remains an issue within our community, and is often a hidden problem, committed by people in positions of trust.

"Preventing and responding to the abuse of older Tasmanians is a whole-of community responsibility," he said.

"Participating in these walks is an important way to raise community awareness about the abuse of older Tasmanians as well as awareness that there is assistance available.

"Today, I am pleased to release Tasmania's third strategy addressing the abuse of older Tasmanians - Lifelong Respect: Tasmania's Strategy to end the abuse of older people (Elder Abuse) 2023-2029.

"This Strategy, which was developed in consultation with the Statewide Elder Abuse Prevention Committee (SEAPAC) and stakeholders, will provide the foundation for the Government's ongoing commitment to older Tasmanians' right to be safe, respected, and live with dignity.

"I would like to thank SEAPAC who provided important advice and feedback regarding the Strategy's development, including representing the lived experience of many older Tasmanians, and COTA (Tas) for their ongoing advocacy and valued partnership with our Government."
