New Youth Participation Kit Empowers Young People

New resources support young people and organisations to strengthen participation in community and decision-making processes.

A new resource is helping young people have a greater say in the decisions that affect their lives.

The Department of Communities (Communities) has launched the Youth Participation Kit, a suite of practical resources designed to support youth participation across Western Australia.

The kit includes publications for both young people and organisations, providing advice, tools and guidance to help maximise young people's input and contributions to community life.

Providing relevant and up-to-date information, the kits aim to empower young people to actively participate in their communities and decision-making processes. It also supports organisations to engage with young people in ways that are safe, inclusive and meaningful.

The resources can be used in a range of settings, including consultations, workshops, co-design projects, advisory groups and service planning.

The kit aligns with best-practice principles for youth participation and is a key deliverable under Action 1.3 of the WA Youth Action Plan 2024-2027, Koorlangka Bidi, which aims to improve outcomes for young people aged 10 to 25 across Western Australia.

The launch coincides with International Youth Day on 12 August, a global celebration of young people and their contributions to communities, organisations and decision-making.

This year's International Youth Day theme, Different Contexts, Common Aspirations, recognises that while young people have diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, they share a common aspiration to be heard and involved in decisions that affect their lives. The Youth Participation Kit supports this by providing practical tools and resources that help young people and organisations work together to create meaningful opportunities for participation.

Communities encourages young people, local governments and community organisations to use the resources to support meaningful youth participation.

The Youth Participation Kit is available to download from the Youth Participation Kit webpage.
