New Zealand, Brazil Agree to Trade and Investment Dialogue

New Zealand and Brazil have agreed to set up a Trade and Investment Dialogue to grow trade and investment between the two countries, Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay says.

"By setting up this Dialogue, we're committing to work more closely together on trade and economic issues, as well as specific areas like WTO reform," Mr McClay says.

"That's good news for exporters. When global trade is this unpredictable, it pays to have strong, steady relationships.

"Over the past 60 years, New Zealand and Brazil have built a solid partnership, backed by close people-to-people, education and cultural ties, and a shared commitment to open, rules-based trade."

The Dialogue will also be used to discuss ways to deepen the broader trade relationship, including through trade negotiations. It follows a meeting of senior New Zealand and Brazilian officials in Brasília in September.

Two-way trade between New Zealand and Brazil totalled NZ$528 million in the year ending March 2026. New Zealand exports to Brazil were NZ$205 million, with key exports including travel services, pharmaceuticals, fruits and nuts, mechanical machinery, and electrical machinery and equipment. Brazilian exports to New Zealand were worth NZ$323 million, including coffee, tea and spices, wood pulp, pharmaceuticals and animal feed.

Dates for the first meeting will be set following the second round of Brazil's elections (25 October) and New Zealand's election (7 November).

"Brazil is a big economy and there's room for our exporters to grow there. This is a practical step towards that, and towards doubling the value of our exports by 2034," Mr McClay says.
