Newly revamped Broome PCYC opens its doors

  • Broome PCYC redevelopment complete with new facilities for boxing, gymnastics and basketball
  • McGowan Government investing in programs aimed at reducing youth offending and improving community safety
  • Supporting at-risk youth and strengthening opportunities for early intervention and diversion
  • Premier Mark McGowan and Police Minister Paul Papalia today joined Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna to officially relaunch the new Broome PCYC.

The complex has undergone a $1.3 million makeover to expand its capacity and the range of programs on offer for young people.

The McGowan Government is investing significantly in PCYCs across the State, to deliver activities and programs aimed at supporting young people to engage in positive activities and live productive lives.

It is part of the State Government's broader approach to crime prevention and providing safe spaces and structured programs to support at-risk youth.

The Broome PCYC first opened its doors in 1978 and for decades has provided a safe environment for young people to engage in positive social interaction and meaningful activities.

The new Broome PCYC features upgraded facilities for boxing, gymnastics, fitness and basketball along with a refurbished administration area, upgraded bathrooms and changing rooms, new external lighting and improved landscape treatments.

PCYC Broome also runs SafeSPACE, SafeSISTAs and Boys SafeSPACE - programs aimed at reducing youth offending and strengthening opportunities for early intervention and diversion.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

"PCYC does a terrific job right across the State giving young people a supportive environment where they can have fun and interact socially in a positive way.

"Sport and the other activities are a great way to boost a young person's self-esteem and engage them positively.

"That's why my Government is investing in early intervention programs like PCYC, particularly in regional communities, where boredom and disengagement can sometimes lead young people down the wrong path."

As stated by Police Minister Paul Papalia:

"PCYCs do outstanding work providing young people with activities where they can be challenged, educated and engaged.

"The activities and the staff at PCYC can re-engage alienated young people and help them on a path to a purposeful and meaningful life.

"Regrettably, the former Liberal National Government cut funding to PCYC and allowed police to be withdrawn from centres across the State.

"Under the McGowan Government and Commissioner Dawson's leadership, police have been re-engaged with PCYC and the Government's investment is ensuring the community continues to benefit from the outstanding work of PCYCs."

As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:

"It's fantastic to see the new facilities here in Broome completed.

"For decades, the Broome PCYC has provided a safe space for vulnerable young people.

"These new modern facilities will ensure the centre can continue to deliver these great programs which play an important part in the Broome community.

"Like any community, Broome faces challenges when it comes to youth crime.

"But I'm proud to be part of a Government that is investing in initiatives like PCYC to provide our young people with a safe space and structured activities."
