Newport man charged after assaulting police members

Detectives fom Hobsons Bay Crime Investigation Unit have charged a man following the alleged assault of two police members last Wednesday (12 September), Victoria Police say.

Police were called to a Collingwood Road premises in Newport about 1230am when it is alleged that a man came out of the home throwing punches and kicking the police members.

During the incident, o/c spray was deployed and multiple police units responded.

Two police members sustained facial injuries and various sprains and bruising to their bodies.

They were both taken to hospital for treatment.

A 40-year-old Newport man was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with two counts of assault emergency services worker on duty, two counts of intentionally cause injury and two counts of recklessly cause injury.

He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ court today (17 September).
