News Innovation Fund Recipients Announced

The News Innovation Fund is designed to support innovation, sustainability and diverse public interest journalism. The 54 funded projects include initiatives supporting regional, First Nations, culturally and linguistically diverse, disability and LGBTQIA+ audiences.

The program is also supporting a range of important initiatives in public interest journalism, including:

  • Deaf Connect, which will receive $1.4 million to expand Auslan90 into Australia's first national Auslan-first digital news service. The expanded service will deliver daily bulletins, weekly reporting and live event coverage for the Deaf community.
  • National Indigenous Times, which will receive $2.2 million to develop their staffing footprint across over 40 regional and remote local government areas. The expanded network will provide career pathways for indigenous journalism in the regions, while promoting place-based reporting in partnership with community organisations currently in news deserts.
  • Country Press Australia, which will receive $2.2 million to improve the commercial and digital capacity of more than 100 member publishers. The project will provide newsrooms with crucial training and shared resources to support their adaptation to a changing technological and commercial environment.

The News Innovation Fund is part of the $153.5 million News Media Assistance Program, which supports public interest journalism and media diversity in Australia.
