Wagga Wagga's significant Plumpton Road Upgrade project has progressed to the next stage, with Council completing negotiations and awarding the Design and Construction contract to Huon Contractors Pty Ltd following an extensive tender evaluation process.
The $66 million project involves the duplication of Plumpton Road, along with improvements to key infrastructure in the surrounding area to deliver a road corridor designed to sustainably handle the city's future population growth.
The NSW Government is providing over $49 million to enable delivery of this key road project.
In early November 2025, Council held its fourth round of information sessions with residents and businesses adjacent to the project works area.
These sessions provided an update on the Design and Construct contract, intersection treatments, including the status of Council's applications to signalise the intersection with Gregadoo Road (traffic lights), and the next steps for Council and the contractors.
Early works such as service relocations, vegetation removal, and site establishment are scheduled to commence in December 2025 and continue through the first quarter of next year.
Council's Executive Manager – Major Projects Darryl Woods said detailed design is now underway and expected to be completed by April 2026, with road construction expected to start mid-next year.
"As the contractor carries out the detailed design, they will be getting in touch with relevant stakeholders at multiple stages throughout the process to get their feedback to identify any issues or concerns with the design or construction plans," Mr Woods said.
"Council appreciates the ongoing community input and, along with the contractor, remains committed to keeping directly impacted stakeholders informed as the project progresses."
Once early works are completed and the detailed design has been finalised, construction will commence on the road pavement. Pending project approvals and weather permitting, the project is planned for completion in 2027.
"We will endeavour to keep the road open to traffic, but there will be some lane closures and speed restrictions in place at different stages during the construction phase," Mr Woods said.
"Huon Contractors will work closely with local residents, businesses and the wider community to minimise impacts for the duration of construction."
The NSW Government has invested $49.57 million in the project through the Accelerated Infrastructure Fund Round 3, alongside a $16.52 million contribution from Wagga Wagga City Council.
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said, this is an important investment in Wagga Wagga which will help support up to 5500 new homes.
"Accelerating essential infrastructure like roads, is crucial to enable more housing for growing regional cities like Wagga Wagga.
"It's great to see the Plumpton Road project progressing so more people can move into well-serviced homes in Wagga Wagga's Southern Growth area sooner."
The project is funded by the NSW Government via the Accelerated Infrastructure Fund (AIF) Round 3, in association with Wagga Wagga City Council.
