Nightclub blast in Azerbaijan: dozens of casualties

Police and medical crews rushed to the scene following a blast at a nightclub in Azerbaijan's capital of Baku on Sunday.

The explosion set off a fire at Location Baku Club with dozens of casualties reported by the local media.

The prosecutor general's office cited preliminary information, saying at least one died at the scene and 31 were injured " to various degrees" in the explosion caused by gas leak from a propane gas bottle.

TV footage showed police officers and paramedics trying to help dozens of young people lying on the pavement and near damaged cars outside the club wrecked by the explosion, while sirens wailed as more ambulances deployed to the scene.

The emergency services issued a statement saying firefighters extinguished the fire before it could spread.
