Council is asking Nimmitabel residents to help address the high number of sewer blockages and infrastructure problems in the village, with our wastewater team removing non-flushable wet wipe blockages from the Nimmitabel sewer system every single week in recent months.
The only things you can flush down the toilet are pee, poo and toilet paper. That's all.
Recent changes to packaging laws mean manufacturers have had to stop marketing wet wipes as flushable when they absolutely are not. Despite these changes, our team continue to respond to callouts to keep the Nimmitabel sewer system functioning every week.
We need your help to keep these non-flushable wipes out of local pipes. Please, put used wet wipes in the bin where they belong.
What happens when wet wipes are flushed down the toilet
Wet wipes form revolting masses of congealed wipes, fats, oils and grease that are known as fatbergs. Fatbergs block pipes, clog pump stations, and can cause enormous damage to the sewer system.
Worse still, actual real-life human beings-your friends and neighbours- remove fatbergs by hand. Can you imagine having to do that?
What about at 3am when it's below freezing? Or 35 degrees at the height of summer?
Our dedicated teams are doing this once a week, every single week, month after month after month.
One small change is all it takes
If it's not pee, poo or toilet paper, please, just put it in the bin instead. This is all it takes to solve the problem for good.
