Nominate an exceptional female role model

Nominations are now open for the Inspiring South Australian Women's Award 2020, an Australia Day award that recognises the contribution women make to the community.

The award, which was first established in 2011 and was formerly known as the Women Hold Up Half the Sky Award, is part of the Australia Day awards and honours. It has been renamed to commemorate the 125th anniversary of South Australian women winning the right to vote and stand for State Parliament.

There are two categories - the Inspiring SA Women's Award and the Emerging Leader's Award, plus the option to include a Commendation Award.

Minister for Human Services Michelle Lensink said the award gives members of the community an opportunity to nominate women who have made an impact, changed lives or left a community legacy.

"Like the women who fought for our rights over 125 years ago, this award recognises those leaders who have made an outstanding contribution in their field and the community," said Minister Lensink.

"This can be from any area, including health, education, science and medicine, business, arts and media, Indigenous initiatives, sport and recreation and prevention of violence."

Last year's winner, Emmah Evans, said the award had helped her connect with Government bodies as she worked on her causes of fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis research, anti-bullying mentoring and mental health awareness.

"I was able to be acknowledged and recognised for the work I do. I am passionate about it and I do it because I enjoy it, but to be recognised at a state level was an accomplishment and an honour," said Emma.

"There are a lot of unsung heroes in our community and the award is about acknowledging those positive and inspiring individuals."

Minister Lensink will present the awards at the Australia Day Awards ceremony at Government House.

Nominations close on November 1, and information is available at australiadaysa.com.au
