Queensland is home to many exceptional Australians, who can now be nominated for the 2023 Australian of the Year Awards.
Queensland's next Australian of the Year Award recipients will be announced in November and go on to represent the state at the national ceremony on the eve of Australia Day 2023.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said nominations are open in the four categories:
- Australian of the Year
- Senior Australian of the Year (65 or over)
- Young Australian of the Year (16 to 30)
- Australia's Local Hero
"Queenslanders are proud of the many people in our communities who lead, inspire and take the time to support those around them," the Premier said.
"Their commitment and courage change our lives, and the Australian of the Year 2023 awards are a way to celebrate their achievements.
"These annual awards recognise the people who make Queensland, and Australia, a better place."
"Nominees, finalists and the eventual winners all deserve our thanks as they represent the many thousands of Queenslanders who work hard for our communities every day."
Queensland's 2021 Australian of the Year award went to Sue and Lloyd Clarke for their commitment to supporting and empowering victims of domestic and family violence through their foundation, Small Steps 4 Hannah.
Dr Colin Dillon AM APM was the 2021 Queensland Senior Australian of the Year for his dedicated work with the Queensland Police Service and in the community.
Dr Tahnee Bridson was the 2021 Queensland Young Australian of the Year as founder of the Hand-n-Hand Peer Support initiative to assist healthcare workers.
Ms Saba Abraham was the 2021 Queensland Local Hero award recipient for her dedication supporting refugees and building stronger multicultural communities.
Sue and Lloyd Clarke said the Australian of the Year Awards were an important part of the national outlook.
"There is an Australian spirit which enables us to support each other and helps us to look out for people who get knocked down," they said.
"If you think someone's doing a great job and making life better for everyone in our Queensland communities, then nominate them for an Australian of the Year Award.
"Queenslanders should recognise the amazing Australians who are out there doing the hard yards and making this country even better."
