Nominations are now open for the Auspire Australia Day Council WA Community Citizen of the Year Awards.
Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said the Awards are about acknowledging and celebrating the incredible work done by our citizens day in and day out.
"So much of the wonderful work that goes on in our community goes unrecognised, and these awards are a fantastic opportunity to shine a light on some of that work," Mr Zempilas said.
This year's Citizen of the Year Award recipient, Megan Krakouer, said the award has made a huge difference to her work as an advocate on issues that affect Aboriginal people.
"It's basically highlighted some of the issues that I fight for in terms of incarceration, deaths in custody, high removals (of Aboriginal children by authorities), homelessness and so forth, and it has actually put a spotlight on the issues that I advocate for," Ms Krakouer said.
"Whole-heartedly, I would definitely encourage people to nominate family, friends, colleagues for Community Citizen of the Year, it's actually been so beneficial and so humbling for me."
As well as the overall Community Citizen of the Year, the Awards also recognise the Young Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals aged 16-30 years), Senior Community Citizen of the Year (for individuals aged 65 years and over), and Active Citizenship (an award for community groups or events).
Sixteen-year-old, Sian Williams, won the youth award for her work to help build confidence and resilience in children, and says the award has helped promote the work she does.
"I think this award is a great opportunity to get more young people like me out there in the community, and also encourages people to get their voice out there," Miss Williams said.
"If you feel this is something that can help yourself or other people definitely go for it. Just try it out because it's something amazing to do for yourself or whoever you want to nominate."
