City of Darwin is calling on residents to recognise the people and groups who contribute to the community, with nominations now open for the 2027 Citizen of the Year Awards.
The Citizen of the Year Awards are City of Darwin's highest honour, recognising the outstanding contributions of people and groups across the community.
The awards celebrate people who support others, give back and help bring the community together.
Lord Mayor Peter Styles encouraged people to think about the quiet achievers, community leaders and volunteers whose efforts often go unrecognised.
"Across Darwin, there are many people who generously give their time and talents to support others and make our community a welcoming and connected place," Mr Styles said.
"Some are well-known community leaders, while others work quietly behind the scenes.
"These awards give us the opportunity to say thank you and celebrate the difference they make to our municipality.
"I encourage everyone to think about the people who give their time to support our community and consider nominating them for an award," he said.
Nominations are open across three categories:
- Citizen of the Year: Recognises an individual who has made a significant contribution to the community and gone above and beyond for the benefit of others.
- Young Citizen of the Year: Recognises a young person aged 16 to 29 who has made a significant contribution to their community and helped improve the lives of others.
- Community Event of the Year: Recognises an individual or group responsible for staging an outstanding event that brings people together and strengthens community connections.
The awards are administered by City of Darwin on behalf of the Australia Day Council Northern Territory and form part of the annual Australia Day celebrations.
All nominees will be invited to attend the Australia Day Community Celebration and Citizen of the Year Awards ceremony on Tuesday 26 January 2027, where the award recipients will be announced.
Nominations close Monday 23 November 2026.
