Non-fatal shooting in Coburg North

A man has been injured following a police shooting in Coburg North this afternoon.

Police observed a male, wanted for questioning in relation to the death of a man in Albanvale on 25 June, driving a vehicle on Newlands Road about 4.40pm.

It's believed the man saw the police and took off in his vehicle with police in pursuit.

A short distance away Crime Investigation Unit detectives were involved in a short foot pursuit with the male.

The male confronted the detectives with a screwdriver and an officer discharged their firearm, shooting the man.

The 64-year-old Broadmeadows man was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Armed Crime Squad detectives will investigate the incident which will be oversighted by Professional Standards Command, as per normal procedure when a police firearm is discharged.
