North Brisbane Upgrade: Interest Sought to Ease Traffic

Minister for Transport and Main Roads The Honourable Brent Mickelberg
  • Expressions of Interest are now open for the duplication of the Linkfield Road Overpass.
  • This project is designed to improve safety, ease congestion and keep freight and commuters moving efficiently.
  • Upgrade will get commuters home safer and faster, reducing the risk of bridge strikes.

The Australian and Queensland Governments are getting on with the job of improving safety and efficiency along one of northern Brisbane's busiest transport corridors by opening expressions of interest (EOI) to duplicate the Linkfield Road Overpass.

The Linkfield Road Overpass, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments, will be duplicated to four lanes with a six-metre height clearance.

The upgrade will help reduce the chance for bridge strikes along this major arterial road.

The Linkfield Road Overpass EOI will be combined with the Beams Road and Gympie Road Intersection Upgrade EOI.

This approach will reduce duplication, allow better coordination deliver certainty for industry, and keep motorists moving throughout the works.

The Australian Government has committed $125.5 million and the Queensland Government $50.5 million to fund the $176 million overpass project.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King welcomed the project progressing to procurement.

"It's great to see the Linkfield Road Overpass upgrade moving into the construction procurement phase," Minister King said.

"We are now one step closer to getting this important project underway.

"This project will significantly improve safety and ensure that freight can move more efficiently through the region."

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the project would help get Queenslanders home sooner.

"The project will support Queenslanders getting home to their families more quickly and more safely," Minister Mickelberg said.

"We are getting on with the job of moving towards the construction phase of a major upgrade to Linkfield Road Overpass providing Queenslanders with the road infrastructure they deserve, just like we said we would.

"Duplicating the overpass with a six metre clearance means commuters will reduce the chance of bridge strikes that can close the road.

"Releasing the EOI sends a clear signal to the industry we are moving forward with this critical infrastructure for Brisbane's north.

"Bridge strikes are a risk at this location, and these works will be a significant step in helping address the risk on a major arterial location."

Federal Member for Petrie Emma Comer said the EOI process sent a clear signal to industry.

"By releasing the EOI, we are providing a clear signal to the industry that we are moving forward with this critical infrastructure for Brisbane's north," said Ms Comer.

"I look forward to seeing this vital project progress towards construction over the coming year.

"Releasing this EOI is a significant step in delivering this project for the local community."

Federal Member for Dickson Ali France welcomed the progress on the project.

"This project has been a long time coming, so taking it one step closer to construction is great news for my community, many of which use this road every day," said Ms France

"This is part of our plan to deliver a safer and better Bruce Highway."
