North East Boating Incident

Shortly before midnight on 3rd October 2022, Tasmania Police received a call for assistance relating to two people who had fallen overboard from a 7.8 metre yacht which was anchored off shore of the North East corner of Badger Beach.

One of the occupants of the yacht was able to get back onto the vessel and raise the alarm. Ground Police were able to locate the Yacht offshore, where observations could be maintained until assistance from a vessel from Tamar Sea Rescue Service arrived to assist.

An 18 year old female from Punchbowl, who had raised the alarm was extracted from the Yacht by the rescue vessel, and then transported to Launceston General Hospital by ambulance.

The other occupant of the yacht who is believed to be the skipper, a 59-year-old man from Punchbowl, was located by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, in the water deceased.

Police would like to offer their condolences to the family involved.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
