Rockhampton Regional Council has commenced works this week to upgrade the main access road at the North Rockhampton Cemetery, improving safety, parking, and the overall appearance of the historic site.
Rockhampton Region Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the project will reconstruct the 210-metre internal roadway, improve drainage, create 32 new parking bays and 22 new garden beds.
"North Rockhampton Cemetery has been a place of remembrance for our community for more than 130 years," Cr Rutherford said.
"Council has carefully considered the site and redesigned it to ensure loved ones continue to feel welcome when they visit to pause and reflect.
"While there may be some temporary disruptions over the next few weeks as the new road and kerbing are installed, these works will also deliver new designated parking bays, sandstone blocks, and garden beds featuring Jerilderie Red Bottle Trees and Green Island shrubs.
"We want to reassure community members that all scheduled funeral and burial services will continue as normal, with works pausing out of respect during services."
"The design of these works will also increase burial capacity, allowing Council to extend the life of North Rockhampton Cemetery so it remains a place of remembrance for many years to come."
The project is expected to be complete by the end of March, weather permitting.
The community are advised:
- Funeral services will operate as normal, with construction works pausing during service times.
- There will be temporary disruptions and changed internal access during construction.
- There will be noise impacts during normal working hours, 7am to 5pm weekdays.
- Traffic management will operate at the Yaamba Road entry, with visitors encouraged to follow instructions and exercise caution for community safety.
