Mitchell Shire Council has joined the Northern Councils Alliance in calling for State Election commitments to the infrastructure and services Melbourne's north needs.
We continue to hear from Mitchell Shire residents about the need for improvements to the Hume Freeway, better rail connections and easier access to hospital and specialist health services.
These concerns form part of a broader regional campaign bringing together the Mayors of Banyule, Darebin, Hume, Mitchell, Merri-bek, Nillumbik and Whittlesea.
Our priority projects are well-defined and, in an election year, we are asking all candidates to work with us to ensure our community has access to jobs, education and services.
The Northern Councils Alliance's key priorities are:
- Upfield to Wallan rail extension
- Northern bus network transformation
- Hume Freeway expansion
- Outer Metropolitan Ring Road / (E6)
- New outer north hospital
- Northern Trails Network
- Inclusive Employment Program
Mitchell Shire Mayor and Northern Councils Alliance Deputy Chair John Dougall said investment was needed to give communities fair access to opportunities and essential services.
"Where you live should not determine how easily you can access opportunity," Cr Dougall said.
"Investing now will ensure our region is equipped for the future."
More than one million people live across Melbourne's north, with the population expected to reach 1.5 million by 2036.
