The Northern Territory Government acknowledges the passing of Loraine Braham, former Member for Braitling and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and extends our heartfelt condolences to family and friends.
Loraine Braham served with distinction as the Member for Braitling in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1994 until her retirement in 2008.
In doing so, she made history as the first woman from Central Australia elected to the Northern Territory Parliament, paving the way for women to occupy senior and respected roles in public life and ensuring a seat at the table where decisions are made.
She was a fierce advocate for Alice Springs and Central Australia, always keeping her town front and centre in her work.
During her parliamentary service, Loraine held the esteemed office of Speaker of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly on two occasions: first from 1997 to 1999 and again from 2001 to 2005.
In breaking new ground as the first woman ever to hold the position, she demonstrated integrity, fairness, and a strong commitment to the democratic process.
Loraine was widely respected for her independence and strength of character, never allowing party politics to stand in the way of ensuring the voice of Alice Springs was heard.
Across her career as an educator, local councillor, and parliamentarian, Loraine showed deep dedication to public service. Her legacy extends beyond policy; it lives on in the doors she opened, the confidence she inspired in other women, and the lasting impact she made on the political landscape of Central Australia and the Northern Territory.
In recognition of her service and lifelong contribution to public life, a state memorial will be held in her honour.
May she rest in peace.
