Northern Territory Secures Australia's Northern Defense

NT Government

The Northern Territory is once again proving why it is Australia's strategic frontline, with Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025 (TS25) officially underway across Australia.

Running from 13 July to 4 August, TS25 is the largest iteration of this major exercise since its inception in 2005, bringing together over 35,000 personnel from 19 nations, including Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom's Carrier Strike Group the HMS Prince of Wales, which was visited by the Chief Minister last week.

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said the Northern Territory is a trusted partner and long-term enabler of Australia's Defence capability, playing an important role in the safety and security of the nation.

"The Territory's bases, barracks, training areas and ranges are mission-critical for the Australian Defence Force and our allies. Whether it's sustaining operations, staging deployments or supporting our national resilience, the Northern Territory is indispensable to Australia's security," Mrs Finocchiaro said.

"Talisman Sabre is more than a display of military strength. It is a clear signal to the world that the Northern Territory stands ready to support our national security while driving jobs and economic growth here at home."

For the first time, up to 1,500 troops from the Australian Army's 2nd Division will focus on protecting Defence bases and critical infrastructure centred around Darwin, RAAF Base Tindal in Katherine.

Additional activities will take place in the Bradshaw, Mount Bundy and Delamere training areas, delivering an economic boost to local businesses in hospitality, logistics and support services.

The exercise coincides with the Katherine Show, with an additional 5,000 visitors expected over the weekend.

In the coming months, as part of our year of action, certainty and security, the Chief Minister and the Minister for Defence NT will lead a mission to Japan and the United States to deepen strategic ties and attract long-term defence and economic investment into the Territory.

"The CLP Government is committed to making the Northern Territory the most attractive place in Australia to invest, and we are focused on rebuilding our economy," Mrs Finocchiaro said.

"Our mission is clear: to secure our economic future, create jobs for Territorians, and cement the Territory as a pillar of Australia's defence strategy."
