The ACT Government is progressing work on the new northside hospital, the largest single investment in a health infrastructure project in the ACT.
The new hospital is being built on the site of the North Canberra Hospital in Bruce – a block surrounded by native bushland.
To ensure the development appropriately considers potential impacts on the environment, an application has been submitted to the Department of Environment, Energy, Water and Climate Change, outlining how the project is being designed in a way that protects key environmental values.
This is part of a legislative requirement under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (1999).
All measures have been taken to limit the impact on mature and hollow-bearing trees where possible, while at the same time providing safety for the community by outlining which trees will need to be removed for bushfire protection.
Ecological surveys were conducted last year to map the vegetation and identify flora and fauna in the area surrounding the hospital project.
This application is for the overall site impact. Other approvals, such as Development Applications, will be required for upcoming early works.
The public exhibition period is open until Wednesday 18 February, and can be viewed at Referral summary · EPBC Act Public Portal.
Next steps for the project include consideration of the Business Case, in parallel with the start of early works construction in early 2026. Early works will prepare and establish the site for main works construction and include utilities upgrades, demolition and relocation of services.
Schematic Design also starts this month and includes consultation with community, clinicians and consumers to help shape the detailed design and ensure the new hospital reflects community needs.
Construction on the new Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) facility in Erindale and the on-campus childcare centre and carparks will also start this year.
North Canberra Hospital will remain open and fully operational during the delivery of the project.
