A drive through the city for a Melbourne man late last week proved costly when he was caught watching a video about 'how to make bread dough'.
Public Order Response Unit members were patrolling the CBD on Friday night when they spotted the motorist in Lonsdale Street about 9.15pm.
The driver, a Malaysian national - who it was discovered had been driving in Victoria unlicensed for the last six years, was seen watching his phone displaying a video about how to make bread dough.
The 31-year-old from Melbourne was issued a penalty notice for unlicensed driving at a cost of $1018 and a penalty notice for driving while looking at a portable display device at a cost of $611 and four demerit points.
Mobile phones and other devices (yes, your Smartwatch counts!) are distractions, especially while driving.
They increase your chances of being involved in a crash or near crash.
Here are some tips to decrease those chances and distractions:
⚠ If your phone has an app or function that prevents distraction while driving, you can use that.
🤫 Consider putting your phone on silent and out of reach - or turn it off.
☎ Divert all calls to voicemail.
📲 Pull over safely and park to make or receive a call.
Remember, taking your eyes off the road for two seconds or more doubles your crash risk.
A mobile phone can be important in an emergency. If you need to use your mobile phone to call for help, stop and park safely.
